Poetry | January 2008

$1,000 down

By Madelyn Rosenberg

The steamer couldn’t vanquish the chocolate
Or blackberry jam
Or muddy prints from a size six shoe.
If only we’d known
We wouldn’t have bothered
Erasing the pencil marks on the doorframe.
A year of your life
Wiped out by one small stub of pink rubber
For a rental deposit
We would never get back.
