Five Seeds

By Rachel Gurevich

We planted five seeds,
so carefully.
One-by-one.

For each seed,
We toiled the ground,
Loosening and preparing the earth.

For each seed,
We dug a hole
In the moist, wet soil.

We covered each with nutrients,
And we kept them warm and watered below.

We couldn’t see the planted seeds,

But we knew they were growing.

Slowly, steadily, quietly.

Time passed,
And two beautiful sunflowers rose from the ground.
And they blossomed and glistened with morning dew.

But we planted five seeds.

What about the others?
Where are our three missing flowers?

Time passes,
And we know the other seeds will never grow.

They decompose,
They become earth.

But, perhaps, the ground is still fertile.
And there will be more seeds
And another season to try again.

And we will try
again.

And again. And again,

until we have our garden.
