Poetry | June 2009

holding my son at 2 a.m.

By Larry Bauer

my son woke
me at 2 a.m. today
to tell me he
had “a powerful
bad dream”

i held him
and reassured
him that he
was ok

minutes later
he told me
that he “couldn’t
stop shaking
and shivering”

at his request,
i sprayed a
second mist
of “bad-dream
spray” on his
pillow

and then
we prayed

asking god to
remove his
bad dreams and
direct his
attention to what
god would have
him be

then he
returned to sleep
