Fever Fugue

By Erin Murphy

I’m not home. I’m out of town.
My daughter calls me
on the phone. She has a fever.
My daughter calls me. I try
to comfort her. I’m out of town.
She says hold on. I hear her
vomiting in the background.
I’m out of town. My daughter
has a fever and calls me
on the phone. The sitter
is downstairs and doesn’t know
what’s going on. I’m out of town.
My daughter is vomiting.
Go get the sitter, I say.
She says hold on. My daughter
calls me on the phone. I try
to comfort her. I sing her a song.
My daughter’s sick. I hear her
call me. I’m trying to hold on.
