The Baby Peeled the Clock Today

By Claire Massey

The baby peeled the clock today,
I didn’t let him eat the bits.
He pulled apart time, I put it away.
Each time I wiped he managed to spray;
On the sodden carpet he sits.
The baby peeled the clock today.
I couldn’t get a mouthful to stay.
He sucks his food and then he spits.
He pulled apart time, I put it away.
He whined, we walked, the sky turned grey.
I forgot to swerve where the yappy dog shits.
The baby peeled the clock today.
At nap time he just wanted to play.
His screams rip up what silence knits.
He pulled apart time, I put it away.
I soothe and stroke. I try not to fray.
I wipe and tidy but nothing fits.
The baby peeled the clock today.
He pulled apart time, I put it away.
