Caramel Macchiato

By Susan Plett

The first sip is steamed
milk overlaid with promise
like the hope in the phrase “the ultrasound
shows ripe egg follicles”

The next sip has more caffeine, a deeper bite
like the narrow tooth of the needle
I give myself to induce ovulation

Then it’s intervals of sip and savor
sip and savor
round full-bodied anticipation
a delight of settled froth
and syrup — like mother’s milk
on a newborn tongue
