Poetry | February 2011

Wise

By Emily Morelli

Trickster, master
of coils and passages,
corporeal;
night swimmer of concentrated
currents; climber of memory,
keeper of filaments,
of everyday accidents;
little squeezer
of time–
the world
a cord you played
in your grasp:
you drove rhythms,
scared doctors,
confounded machines
meant to monitor

your vitals–
This was your original mischief:

your heartbeat
your heartbeat
your heartbeat

Love the steadily beating heart at the end.
