Writing Prompt: Living With Captain Underpants

By Karna Converse

In this month’s essay, Lisa Harper reflects on her five-year-old son’s love of books and the impact a certain superhero has made. “There is more to books for young readers than letter-learning, things more important than decoding phonics,” she writes. “There are things sensed and things dreamt, things that vault him away from heaven and earth and into the strange whirling of his imagination. Already these things bring him a new version of the world.”

Name your beginning reader’s favorite book or book series. What is your child learning from it?
