Daughter Heart

By Andrea Potos

It raps on the gates
of mine, a rust-
pocked hinge
opening
onto the place where
she waits
in salt-stained air,
out where the sun
excludes nothing,
not the sprawled blue jellyfish,
the ripped lacery of kelp,
not the beached-up bone
of some creature long gone,
scrubbed to a sheen by the sea.
