HOWL: for new mamas
I saw the best moms of my generation destroyed by Mum-Mums, Ergo’ed up in their lululemons, dragging themselves through Starbucks at dawn looking for an iced coffee,
tattoo-wristed hipsters nursing for the majestic maternal connection to the baby
dynamo in the middle of night,
who bathed and sleep-sacked and doe-eyed, sat up sleepless in the supernatural darkness
of blackout blinds floating across the ceiling-high windows of Brooklyn lofts,
who bared their breasts to strangers at the mall and saw misled soccer moms
staggering from game to game emaciated,
who passed through La Leche League meetings with radiant eyes, hoping for inclusivity
amongst hardcores on the scene,
who were expelled from many a restaurant for crazy & punishingly obscene toddlers
in tow,
who cowered with unshaven legs in waist-high briefs, burning their thongs in wastebaskets
and listening to the tiny Terror in their skull,
who got busted in their Bobas returning through JFK with bulk baby shampoo
for New York,
who ate fifteen cookies in a sitting or drank pink rosé wine by the box, drunk, and purgatoried
their ears night after night
with hollers, with cries, with boogeyman nightmares, liquid ibuprofen and swaying squats
and hummed lullabies,
incomparable organic sheets of shuddering owls and kangaroos in the wind leaping toward Navajo prints of aden + anais, illuminating all the breathable world of muslin between.
