Yard Duty

By Heather Angier

not stars—

            but more

planetary—orbiting out

across wide swaths

of blacktop, each

sweat-glittered body

sparking

laughter

under a punishing sun—

and it’s miraculous

(understand?)

no one here is falling

or colliding—every

hurtling child

somehow protected

by the playground’s

gravitational pull
