Up North

By Viola Lee

If you go to the Porcupine Mountains,
Upper Peninsula of Michigan,
and stay in one of the yurts in the park,
be sure you bring bug repellent and bags
especially if you go right in June
after school lets out for your summer break.
Zipper your raincoat and put on your hood.
Bring plenty of water and almond cream.
Coffee in the morning makes one grateful.
No need for your gluten free rice cooker.
If you bring both your five and eight-year-old,
be sure you remind them when they complain
that this builds character.  It's called hard work.
Play in the creek.  Shit and piss in a can.
