Finally

By Lori Negridge Allen

for fear of stirring old coals
or catching the devil’s ear
families like ours
didn’t talk about the past

but Mom told me
on her deathbed
avoiding my hand
that she’d once saved my life

I know, I know, I said
reaching for hers anyway
