Proto-conversations

By Caitlin Prouatt

Knowing you so well that I can
understand the breadcrumbs
that you scatter,
how you wake up with these
doughy thoughts that need a bit
of kneading—
I can try to help them rise.

A dot-to-dot of lyrics or
a sentence from a book,
a memory you have crystallized,
a day you’ve trapped in amber,
a name you’ve anchored firmly
by your beach.

Resounding nouns in
salt-and-pepper phrases:
they are pictures you’re projecting
in the air, your pseudo-cinema,
your record skipping, skipping.

Something so lovely about this and the movement!
