Ice Cream or Funeral

By Claudia Angelillo

i used to smoke this brand of cigarettes called Parliament.

you may know them from another era
when you lived on the island

& maybe you smoked one outside the parlor,

just because you could.

it was / is your right to smoke outside that parlor—

Ice Cream or Funeral.

Whatever.

Too many flavors exist just behind panes

of glass like transparent caskets

of decadence,
depraved & yet

i do think dark
& light can
co-exist

behind parlor
window panes—

Ice Cream or Funeral.

Whatever.

Whichever happens to lick
you first.
