Beginning to Show

By Pamela Gemme

The school librarian eyes
me in my scarlet shirt.
My presence conjures up stares—
rumors burr the air.

I’m some battleground
she mustn’t understand.
Birds and bees books are banned.
I flip her the bird. Picture this—

My last period is Physical Education.
My gym suit is red, white, and blue.
Wonky routine on the trampoline
and still my triple backflip is supreme.
