Holy Shit

By Rachel Beachy

The first flutters felt like gas which is
how so much of motherhood has been since
a twinge of the miracle and mundane
within a single moment
The other day my toddler ran toward me
her hands still so small and reaching and
covered in her own shit
Oh my god, I cried
the same as when she came out—
both an answer
and a prayer.
