Calls for Submissions — February 2014

On the first Wednesday of each month, Literary Mama shares a list of current calls for submissions.  Throughout the month we share new calls for submissions via Facebook and Twitter, so if you want to be kept in the loop, make sure to find us one place and/or the other!

This month,  some calls have deadlines coming up soon, so check those out first.

From the HerStories project:   a call for their  next book, “My Other Ex: Women Write About Friendship Burnouts, Breakups, and Betrayals.”  They seek essays and autobiographical stories that explore the experience of broken friendship. For more specific information about submissions and to submit an essay, please visit here. Brain, Child is seeking personal essays for their second special issue for parents of t(w)eens, Brian, Teen. They’re looking for essays that capture the unique experience of living with and raising t(w)eens. Examples of past published essays include a father coming out to his daughter, a mother letting her son take a gap year between high school and college, and a mother’s foray into heavy metal music with her teen daughter. Read the submission guidelines here. Deadline: February 15, 2014.

Channel your inner Erma Bombeck and enter the annual Erma Bombeck Writing Competition.  The winner earns $500 and a registration at the Bombeck Writers Workshop.   The contest closes on February 17th.   For specifics, please visit http://www.wclibrary.info/erma/

“Submit now to Ruminate’s annual nonfiction prize: ” The Nonfiction Prize has gained national recognition, with winning pieces later awarded a Pushcart prize and selected for inclusion in an anthology. The winner of the VanderMey Nonfiction Prize will receive $1500 and publication in the Summer 2014 issue. The runner up will receive $200 and publication. We invite you to enter. Appalachian Heritage has begun their reading year as well.   This literary journal focuses on creative work from/about the Southern Appalachian region.  You can find more about the magazine on their Facebook page.  Their NEW submissions guidelines are listed here.

From Bricolage Magazine:  we are “open for submissions for 2014. Guidelines: http://www.bricolagemagazine.com/p/submissions.html. We are particularly keen on fiction, non-fiction, photography and art that is deeply linked to the part of the world you are from, bringing to the fore non-traditional stories and narrative techniques. ” Bricolage usually responds within four weeks and began reading new submissions on January 1st.

Bellevue Literary Review seeks submissions of previously unpublished fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for an upcoming special issue on illness, health, and healing in the context of environmental issues. Full Grown People publishes personal essays that explore what it means to be an adult. Essays should be between 800 and 4,000 words long and have a literary quality: engaging and smart without being academic or schmaltzy. To submit work, please paste your essay into the body of an email and send it to submissions (at) fullgrownpeople (dot) com. No attachments, please.

Flyway: Journal of Writing and Environment  is open for submissions of unpublished fiction, nonfiction, poetry, comics and visual art.  Reading period is September 1 – May 1.

Western New Mexico University’s literary arts journal Twisted Vine welcomes submissions:
