Profiles Editor Rachel Epp Buller is the editor of Have Milk, Will Travel: Adventures in Breastfeeding. The anthology that reveals the lighter side of nursing and throws a lifeline to mothers in the thick of lactation. She writes:
This book had been in the back of my mind for a long time, ever since nursing three children. The physical experience felt transformative for me, and yet I saw (and continue to see) how the lactating body is such a controversial one in American culture. States now have to pass laws protecting a woman’s right to breastfeed in public space – and still, we read on a weekly basis about instances of discrimination against breastfeeding mothers. Also, what I found again and again in talking with friends and in reading the submissions that came in, breastfeeding can be HARD. So many moms overcome huge obstacles to nurse their babies – through poor latches, infections, low supply, too much supply, pumping at work, etc.; and, so many moms experience huge amounts of guilt for the problems they face.
So my intentions for this book came from multiple places: to provide a lifeline of support to moms in the thick of the early childhood nursing months/years, to reinforce that there are many breastfeeding experiences; and, to offer humor as a way to defuse the potential controversies that surround breastfeeding in our society. The linoleum cut print on the cover is one that I made when my youngest was still nursing.

Sounds like a wonderful book for moms of newborns to have! ‘Breastfeeding’ almost sounds like a politicized word nowadays and to take the misconceptions and stigmas away by discussing it in a humorous, relatable book is a great idea.
As a nursing working mom this strikes me as a must read.
I’ve been planning to get this at the library but I’d love to have it to read and share!
As a first time mom who is part of a mommy-group with other new moms, I know we will certainly appreciate stories of other breastfeeding moms’ triumphs and challenges.
Story exchanges are a rich and meaningful way to normalize and share the joys and trials of breastfeeding. Such a book will enrich the lives of many new and seasoned breastfeeding moms.
