Calls for Submissions — July 2014
On the first Wednesday of each month, Literary Mama shares a list of current calls for submissions. Throughout the month we share new calls for submissions via Facebook and Twitter, so if you want to be kept in the loop, make sure to find us one place and/or the other.

Mom Egg Review is now reading submissions for their 13th Volume. The editors write: “We publish work by mothers about everything, and by everyone about mothers or motherhood. If you are a mother, you may submit work on any topic; if you are not a mother, the piece must have some aspect of mothering or motherhood as a central element…” For more detailed submission guidelines, please click here. They will accept submissions through September 1st and will reply by the beginning of 2015.

Shebooks is reading submissions as part of their kickstarter for “Equal Writes.” There is a reading fee, but the money goes to support women writers. The product of this kickstarter will be an anthology on girl power. See their kickstarter page to learn more about how to donate to the kickstarter and submit your work.

Crown Publishing, a division of Random House, is accepting submissions for their anthology A Letter to My Mom. They seek submissions of fewer than 800 words. The book will be a collection of personal letters from children to their mothers and will feature letters from celebrities as well as people from around the nation. The link includes more detailed submission guidelines.

Understorey Magazine seeks fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry about motherhood for the next issue. “We define motherhood broadly and welcome diverse voices and perspectives. Published writers receive a small honorarium. Open to writers who live in (or have a close connection with) Nova Scotia, Canada. Please see our guidelines. “

Pilgrimage Magazine seeks creative work for their print quarterly. One upcoming topic may prove of particular interest to mama writers: “Sleep.” Check out their guidelines if you have a piece that fits. The reading period continues through October.

We have a call from Minerva Rising. It is an “independent literary journal celebrating the creativity and wisdom in every woman. We publish thought-provoking fiction, non-fiction, photography, poetry and essays by women writers and artists.” Start working on now on your submissions for their upcoming reading periods. Editors will begin reading for an issue on wilderness on June 15th and for an issue on loneliness in October. Both issues might speak to you as a mama writer. Goddard College’s BFA program is starting a new literary magazine. From the new editors: “DUENDE seeks authenticity & soulfulness, earthiness & expressiveness; as Lorca said, DUENDE ‘climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet.’ The first issue debuts online in October. Writers from underrepresented groups especially welcome. Visit duendeliterary.org for complete guidelines.”

Barn Owl Review has just opened its reading period for this year. They welcome submissions of 3-5 poems. This eclectic print journal welcomes new writers as well as established ones. For full information on submitting via Submittable, see their guidelines. They will continue to accept submissions through November.
