Writing Prompt: The Feel of Change

By Dina Relles

Do you regularly free write? Do you wish you did? Several times a month, we’ll post a writing prompt. Open a notebook or a blank page and keep your hand moving for 10 minutes. Don’t worry about grammar or punctuation – just write.

Then, share a link to your free write in the comments section below. We’d love to see what you did with this week’s prompt!

~~~~~
My bare feet touch the soft, cool carpet. I hear the birds through the open window in the hall, interrupted only by the dull hum of the AC. The scent of sunscreen lingers after evening baths.
Jackets hang unworn on the coat rack; socks sit untouched in the top drawer. Cheeks are stung red from their first burn and lush green lines the parkway. I unearth my flip-flops from the closet depths and (how is it? but I do) already miss the warmth of my winter boots and hunkering down in a home half-hidden by snowdrifts.
Emails arrive about school closing ceremonies and summer camp. We start to stumble over our descriptors (“He’s in Kinder–, almost in 1st grade.”). We are marching headlong into the warm months ahead, that oppressive winter a mere memory. Everything around us is morphing, moving on.
Today, free write about change. Change of season, change of outfit, change of address, change of mood. What is evolving around you and how does it feel?
Great prompt! (And very timely for me today.) Here’s my free writing:
Oh Dina, you did it again. I’ve been thinking of this one since I read your prompt. Here’s my version:
“All this change—all these small, daily permutations—makes me feel alive and makes me feel my powerlessness in life, in love, in stopping the eternal coil of time from unwinding and unraveling, and my heart unspools and my gut roils and I cling to hope and to the love I store and harbor and cultivate, against all odds, in my stubborn, determined heart”:
