A Fulbright Scholar and a member of the Ms. Magazine Committee of Scholars, she has published two books on nineteenth-century novels and letters by women; a writing textbook; and is the co-editor of two collections, including an anthology of the literatures of food, Books that Cook: The Making of a Literary Meal and a forthcoming book of essays on women and their machines, From Curlers to Chainsaws. Under the pseudonym J.
