Half of Infinity

By Deborah Bacharach

Once I saw two
ropes turning.

I couldn’t see the ocean
ends. I watched

them slowly come back
to themselves. A friend

swam with dolphins
at five months. A pup

close to her belly. The guide
said, He hears the second

heartbeat; he doesn’t understand
how this can be.
Nor me. Nor me.
