New Mother Blues

By Adrienne Hernandez

because her daughter refuses to nurse
the new mother’s milk drips like tears
she paces the worn linoleum floor
daughter in diapers straddles her hip

the new mother’s milk drips like tears
two feral cats cry outside her window
daughter in diapers straddles her hip
she offers her breast; her daughter cries

new mother feeds cats from her window
paces the worn linoleum floor
she offers her breast; the mother cries:
her daughter refuses to nurse

This is lovely. The form is perfect for that new baby, trying-to-nurse time.
