Postcard from the Winterside of Spring

By Patricia Caspers

 for J

The lake is an icy half moon,
water eclipses each day.

The geese, black questions
on the far pond bank,

honk disapproval
at the bird dog's tendu.

Your father and I
slosh a labyrinth
of snow melt

sun wishing, crocus
anxious, robin
ready.

Write soon.

There is no summer
without you.
