Astounded by Grace

By Mary Ellen Talley

A horse sleeps
standing on three legs
as the fourth leg rests.
It is our nature
to use the gifts
within our grasp—
the horse, but also
the stork, sandhill crane,
great blue heron,
each tucking one leg up
to conserve body heat.

During Zoom yoga,
I balance on one leg
until I wobble sideways
and try again.
My granddaughter,
the dancer, enters the kitchen,
tucks one leg high
while she takes a break
from homework, eats a cookie
like any teen flamingo
and carries on a conversation.

There are moments
I feel like the fledgling
when she leaps high
on one leg,
the other
her black ghillie pointed,
freeze frame
in the horizontal air,
and I don’t mind one bit
the balance I lose
as she gains her own.

“like any teen flamingo” – love it! Full of imagination, yet grounded and real. Zoom yoga!
