Reflection of trees in a body of water

The Sonographer’s Report

By Danielle Boodoo-Fortuné

There is a room without sound inside you. Listen.
Let me be clear as citrine. Let me be clear

as saltwater. Your body is open
as foremilk. Your body will not hold
as tears. You are turning

inside out, like the tide.

The darkness is watery silence

and it does not belong to you.

See? There is a single stem
of mangrove down the centre of you
trying to hold back the whole ocean.

Hold your breath now.

Be nothing but the tightening knot,
nothing but knowing, lone
dark spot passing through the needle’s eye.
