We’re hiring editors for Photography, Social Media, and Fiction!

By Maria Scala

We’re looking for three talented individuals to work independently yet maintain affiliation with a team who meets and completes projects via cyberspace. Read below for the details:

Photo Editor

Our Photo Editor oversees the burgeoning Photography Department of Literary Mama. This creative and detail-oriented individual monitors and organizes photo submissions, researches and contacts photographers in order to build a library of compelling and evocative images, and generates ideas based on themes and ideas presented by the senior editors.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Technically proficient in photography, with supporting educational and career experience
  • Open-minded, diplomatic, and interested in mothercentric literary writing
  • Knowledgeable, or a willingness to learn, about group email conversations (Yahoo), cloud-sharing programs (Google Drive), and content management systems (WordPress)
  • 2 to 4 hours a week.

Social Media Editor

Our Social Media Editor creates and maintains a consistent presence with Literary Mama followers, in conjunction with one or two other editors, that promotes new features on the magazine and new posts on the blog. As well, this individual engages in conversations with like-minded organizations, according to our guidelines, by “liking,” “sharing,” “tweeting,” “retweeting,” “pinning,” and commenting on their posts, and monitors performance metrics regarding posts, reach, and engagement.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Proficient with one or more social media platforms (we have a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Goodreads)
  • Knowledgeable about social media marketing metrics and scheduling tools (we use TweetDeck)
  • Thinks like a marketer and understands how social media can be used to promote a product
  • Experience with group email conversations (Yahoo), cloud-sharing programs (Google Drive and Google Calendar)
  • 1 to 3 hours a week, with ability to post and interact with our community on social media during the day (weekdays).

Fiction Editor

Our Fiction Editor leads, on a rotating basis with another department editor, editorial discussions of submissions to determine whether to accept, reject, or work with a writer on a particular submission. As a confident and capable editor, with a keen interest and understanding of the genre, this individual works with writers to revise pieces for approval by the senior editors.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Experienced in writing, editing, and critiquing as evidenced by publication credits, teaching career, or writing group participation
  • Organized, detail- and deadline-oriented
  • Knowledgeable, or a willingness to learn, about group email conversations (Yahoo), editing software (MS Word, Track Changes function), cloud-sharing programs (Google Drive), and content management systems (WordPress)
  • Knowledgeable about Chicago Manual of Style
  • 4 to 6 hours a week, depending on the number of submissions in the department.

Please note that these are all volunteer positions, as are all positions at Literary Mama. Work is conducted remotely, over the Internet. To apply, please send an email to LMinfo (at) literarymama (dot) com and include a cover letter and resume. Deadline for applications: December 4, 2015. Good luck!
