Literary Mama is Hiring!

We’re looking for 4 individuals—a Blog Editor, Reviews and Profiles Editorial Assistant, a Reviews Editor, and a Photo Editor—to join our efforts in publishing literary writing about motherhood.

Please note: These are volunteer positions. All work is conducted remotely, via internet.

The Details


Blog Editor

Our Blog Editors create and maintain a consistent schedule of blog posts, in conjunction with one or two other blog editors, and work with Social Media Editor to promote posts to Literary Mama friends and followers.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Experience in writing and formatting material for the web
  • Thinks like a marketer and understands how a blog can be used to promote a product
  • Proficient with, or a willingness to learn about, content management systems, group email conversations, and cloud-sharing programs
  • Experience with social media platforms
  • 1 to 5 hours a week

 

Editorial Assistant – Reviews and Profiles

Our Editorial Assistants proofread and perform final copyedits on the website, ensuring that our monthly publishing schedule and editorial standards are met.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Proficient with Chicago Manual of Style
  • Proficient with, or a willingness to learn about, content management systems, group email conversations, and cloud-sharing programs
  • 4 to 6 hours a month, depending on the number of submissions in the department

 

Reviews Editor

Our Reviews Editors coordinate and work with writers to assign book reviews exploring literary work about any form of motherhood. We review both newly released work and older books that we consider to be important to the genre.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Experienced in writing, editing, and critiquing as evidenced by publication credits, teaching career, or writing group participation
  • Open-minded and able to find something positive about any piece of writing
  • Knowledgeable, or a willingness to learn, about group email conversations, editing software, cloud-sharing programs, and content management systems
  • 4 to 6 hours a week, depending on the number of submissions in the department

 

Photo Editor

The Photo Editor overseas the Photography Department, alone or with one other editor, to research and contact photographers in order to build a library of compelling images for our website and generate creative ideas for images to pair with pieces.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Technically proficient in photography
  • Experience as a photo editor and/or photographer a plus.  
  • Open-minded, diplomatic, and interested in mothercentric literary writing
  • Proficient with content management systems, group email conversations, and cloud-sharing programs
  • 2-4 hours a week

Our current team hails from nearly 30 locations throughout the world and includes communications professionals, university professors, MFA students, writers, editors, copyeditors, photographers, and moms. We’re passionate about motherhood, the written word, and the community that brings the two together. We believe we inhabit a unique space in the publishing world and hope you agree.
