The Details
Poetry Editor
Our Poetry Editors work together to assess submissions and determine whether to accept, reject, or work with a writer on a particular submission. Editors must have a keen interest and understanding of poetry, as they work with writers to revise pieces for publication.
Qualifications and Expectations
- Experienced in writing, editing, and critiquing as evidenced by publication credits, teaching career, or writing group participation
- Organized, detail- and deadline-oriented
- Open-minded and able to find something positive about any piece of writing
- Knowledgeable, or a willingness to learn, about Gmail, Google groups, WordPress, Chicago Manual of Style
- 4 to 6 hours a week, depending on the number of submissions in the department
Editorial Assistant
The Editorial Assistant will proofread and perform final copyedits on publications, ensuring that our monthly publishing schedule and editorial standards are met. This position requires completion of an editorial test.
Qualifications and Expectations
- Proficient with Chicago Manual of Style
- Proficient with, or a willingness to learn about, content management systems,
- Group email conversations, and cloud-sharing programs
- 3 to 5 hours a month, depending on the number of submissions in the department
Blog Editor
Our Blog Editors create and maintain a consistent schedule of blog posts such as calls for submissions, book lists, writing prompts, and other promotion of the journal. This editor works collaboratively with the Social Media and Photo Editors to promote Literary Mama.
Qualifications and Expectations
- Thinks like a marketer and understands how a blog can be used to promote a product
- Experience in writing and formatting material for the web
- Proficient with, or a willingness to learn about, content management systems, group email conversations, and cloud-sharing programs
- Experience with social media platforms
- 2 to 5 hours a week
Photo Editor
The Photo Editor oversees the Photography Department with the goal of researching and contacting photographers in order to build a library of compelling images for our website and generating creative ideas for images to pair with pieces. This editor works collaboratively with the Blog and Social Media Editors to promote Literary Mama.
Qualifications and Expectations
- Technically proficient in photography
- Experience as a photo editor and/or photographer.
- Open-minded, diplomatic, and interested in mothercentric literary writing
- Proficient with content management systems, group email conversations, and cloud-sharing programs
- 1 to 3 hours a week
Social Media Editor
Our Social Media Editor creates and maintains a consistent presence with Literary Mama followers to promote new features on the magazine and new posts on the blog. This editor also engages in conversations with like-minded organizations by “liking,” “sharing,” “tweeting,” “retweeting,” “pinning,” and commenting on their posts, and monitors performance metrics regarding posts, reach, and engagement. This editor works collaboratively with the Blog and Photo Editors to promote Literary Mama.
Qualifications and Expectations
- Proficient with numerous social media platforms
- Knowledgeable about social media marketing metrics
- Thinks like a marketer and understands how social media can be used to promote a product
- Experience with group email and cloud-sharing programs
- 2 to 3 hours a week
Webmaster
Our Webmaster will be responsible for ensuring the website is functional, user-friendly, visually pleasing, and up-to-date. She will assist the process of transitioning our site to a mobile-friendly and modern platform. She will share her expertise, troubleshoot issues raised, and work with the Social Media Editor and Publisher to monitor and analyze site performance and review SEO.
Qualifications and Expectations
- Proficient in WordPress
- Proficient in Google Suite (Drive, Groups, Calendar, etc.)
- Demonstrated expertise in HTML
- Organized, detail- and deadline-oriented
- Works well with a team
- 1 to 4 hours a week and available to troubleshoot problems as they arise
