The Ides of March have been and gone and we’re heading onwards into spring. Here at Literary Mama we hope your month of March has held some enjoyable slices of time, perhaps in celebrating Mardi Gras, March Madness, International Women’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, or the Northern Hemisphere’s First Day of Spring.

What have your memorable March moments been this year?

For my family of six, our wonderful road trip with family to Nashville, TN and beyond coincided with the March Madness Basketball tournament. Mardi Gras found me rushing out to buy flour and expensive eggs for pancakes, which seemed silly considering the tradition is to use up your store cupboard supplies before Lent, but still. My children appreciated the gesture!

Seeing daffodils, bluebonnets and other beautiful spring flowers has also been a highlight, prompting thoughts of,

“… those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” Charles Dickens

I wonder if simple moments of refreshment like these have brought you inspiration too?

If you’ve been in LA this month at The Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) Conference and Book Fair, we hope it has been brilliant?

Here are some opportunities for submitting your writing moments:

2025 Steinberg Memorial Essay Prize is named in honor of Fourth Genre‘s founding editor, Michael J. Steinberg and the first place winner of the contest will receive $1000 and publication in the following year’s spring issue. The judge this year is Sonya Huber. Entry fee is $20 and the deadline is: April 15th.

Jaded Ibis Press is offering the Uplift Voices Fiction Award for a fiction book written in English by a US-based writer who identifies as a historically marginalized voice. The prize is $1,500 and a competitive publishing contract, but all submissions will be considered for publication. The entry fee is $20. The deadline is April 15th.

If you’re writing poetry, you may wish to consider the Oberon Poetry Prize. Deadline is April 10th and your submission needs to be up to three poems of no more than two pages each with an $18 entry fee.

A reminder of the Pen Parentis Writing Fellowship for New Parents which welcomes creative writing submissions. The next deadline is April 17th.

Here’s your Literary Mama motivation to maintain momentum as we head into April.
