Opportunities await at Literary Mama

Motherhood is a little like ooblek, the non-Newtonian fluid goo that many of us play with in childhood. In the same way that ooblek is a little bit a solid and a little bit a liquid, motherhood is both a personal endeavor that is unique to each individual and a public experience that connects us in a deep way to people who are vastly different from us. For over 20 years, Literary Mama has been a place where writers can explore these unique, and sometimes contradictory, facets of motherhood.

That unique private/public reality of motherhood can make us feel weirdly isolated and depleted, but joining Literary Mama as a staff member has some benefits that counteract those feelings.

The first? Connection

If your children are very young, you may feel somewhat housebound by naps and bedtimes. If you have older children, you may feel a sense of isolation when they’ve left the nest. If you have teenagers, your isolation may be self-enforced because you are tired of hearing complaints about what you did wrong. Being a part of Literary Mama provides instant connection with others who share a common experience and have common interests, namely writing and/or reading. Plus, Literary Mama staff thank each other profusely for their efforts, unlike teens.

Secondly? Purpose

Motherhood’s purpose is to bring children into the world and raise them into productive humans, but as anyone who has had children knows, mothers have purposes beyond their children. Joining Literary Mama provides a sense of purpose and worth that expands outside of one’s house, neighborhood, or town. Our staff is from all over the nation and world but have the shared goal of giving writers a place to publish.

Finally? Leadership

In a world that changes quickly and where everything can feel uncertain and even frightening, many of us often find ourselves thinking, “What can I do?” or “What difference can I make?” As an art platform, Literary Mama is committed to sharing stories, supporting diverse voices and insights, and being a source of reflection and joy. In order to do these things, we need leaders who want to be part of a community and are eager to learn.

We hope you might be the person who seeks these things and has an interest in applying for two current positions: marketing director and publisher. Come be a part of our team!
