“Mama And . . . Music” February 2026 Prompt

Often without realising, mothers develop a strong connection with music and it continues to change as our motherhood develops and our children grow. In the beginning, I remember feeling my body hum as during pregnancy my baby’s body and mine strove for harmony. The sound of my firstborn and his screams was a whole different genre of music and I lost thoughts of my own as the rhythms of parenting reached their crescendo.
I’ve been through that three times and now, as a mother of four, I have fond memories of singing lullabies to wakeful babies when small. I still remember the sequence of songs I used to hum or sing on autopilot in the hopes that I might soothe and settle them.
These days, we sing in the car. It can be loud, full of rhythm and beats that match our lives, and never truly in sync. Admittedly, our family soundtrack does still include some harmonious screaming (albeit older voices), which I dare to still consider music.
We would love to hear what music and motherhood means to you:
- Do you have pieces of music that immediately conjure up emotions and images of what your motherhood means to you?
- Can you attribute any successes from your parenting days to a piece of music?
- Has your relationship with music changed since you became a mother?
- If you needed to choose a genre of music to match your mothering, what would you choose and why?
- How has music contributed to your thoughts on motherhood?
This month, we’re inviting writers to explore motherhood and music, in whatever form it resonates.
